John Henry Newman was born in London on February 21, 1801, the eldest of six children. His early education was at the Ealing School, a private boarding school. He entered Trinity College, Oxford, in 1817 and went on to become a fellow of Oriel College in 1822. Gordon N. Ray, a graduate of Indiana University, was closely associated with the life and work of William Makepeace Thackeray. His four volume edition of the Letters and private papers appeared in 1945-1946 and his two volume biography in 1954-1955. From 1963 to 1985 Ray was president of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. William K. Foster (born on July 27, 1872 in Greensburg, PA) graduated from Lafayette College in 1896. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta and the Washington Literary Society. After graduation from Lafayette, Foster worked for the Mellon National Penn Bank in Pittsburgh for thirteen years. He later was a broker in Rochester, NY from 1910 until his death on May 23, 1934.
